Shut Up and Sew: Ruffled Burp Cloths

I thought it might be fun to share another baby project today, since dear Erin's baby is scheduled to arrive sometime this week, and maybe even today! Recently I made a few burp cloths for another friends baby shower, and it couldn't have been quicker or easier to make. I am DEFINITELY a novice sewer, so I know ANYONE could make these with the right materials!

You'll need some good cloth diapers, (I used Gerber because of their durability, thickness and softness) your handy ribbon stash, scissors and a sewing machine.
First, cut your bottom ribbon choice a length and a half longer than the width of your burp cloths. This accounts for the extra material you'll need for the ruffling.
Next, run your ribbon through your machine on a wide stitch setting to prepare for your ruffle. (Yes, I still use this method, its just really easy for me and I honestly haven't had much to explore the easier methods yet! You can read more about it here.) Tie off the stitch at one end, and gently pull one thread from the other end of the stitch, your ribbon should begin to ruffle.

Once you have created the ruffle, measuring the length of the ruffle to the width of the burp cloth, run it through your sewing machine to attach it to the edge of your burp cloth.
To finish  your cloth add a nice matching or contrasting ribbon to cover your first seam. Obviously the possibilities are endless. You can mix and match ribbons, widths, amounts of ruffles, etc. to your hearts content!
{After looking at these photo's I am fairly certain you can sew a straighter seam than I can!}

This took no time at all, and yielded a pretty cute result!  I can definitely see myself using this quick and easy project for more shower gifts to come. If you want to see an even better set of burp cloths...you should definitely look back at Erin's version. They were indeed perfect!

I'll be linking to these parties this week. See you there!
Happy Thursday!

Life Is Beautiful Sign

Last week I shared the giant frame my husband made for our mantel.  Well you know I can't let wood go to waste so I came up with a plan for some of the extra.

First, I had my handy husband saw off the angled edges to make them straight.

I found some stain in the garage that was used for the bench in our nook as well as the giant frame and stained up the wood.

I should have stained the edges too but just focused on the top and middle of the wood piece.

I used my Silhouette machine and frosted vinyl to create letters for my sign.

I used my DecoArt white paint to cover the sign.

I painted right over the letters and made sure the sides and top were covered in a light coat of white.

After the light coat of white paint, I removed the vinyl letters to reveal the stained wood beneath.  Of course, I used my trusty sand block to rough it up a bit.

I hammered in some picture hangers on either side.

Finally, it was complete and I was in love.

I had the perfect place for it right above the toy shelf in the living room.

I love the irony of the sign above the mess of toys.  Our life is a beautiful mess and I love it that way.

Thanks for stopping by!

I'll be linking to these fun parties this week.

Happy Tuesday!

Perfect New-Baby Meal: Spicy Chicken Soup

Well everyone, I have a fun treat for you all over the next few months!! Our little lady is scheduled to arrive this week, so I have asked several incredible ladies if they would be willing to share some "baby" themed posts with you over the next few months, and luckily they said yes! :) I'll probably be popping in from time to time, (Or is that just my pre-baby optimism speaking?), but you'll definitely want to stop by and see what they're up to!!

I'm so excited to introduce you to today's guest poster! Allow me to introduce Amanda of OED.

Oed trytwo

Amanda is a hilarious and talented mother of 2 boys, ages 4 and 6, whose blog is a daily recording of their life together. She is one of those highly skilled individuals who is a natural storyteller, and you'll find it impossible to not be charmed by the thoughts and antics of her and her sweet boys. Oh yeah, and she was Valedictorian, so maybe it's not a coincidence that she is such an exceptional writer.

IMG 1094

I love reading through the variety of her posts, some concise and poignant, some thoughtful, some funny and often with good dose of sarcasm, which I just love. She writes about parenting with a raw honesty and vulnerability that some parents (especially moms) try to tuck away. I love reading her honest and charming stories, and since her boys are older than my little guy, I get a glimpse at what is ahead. :)

Her posts are peppered with stunning photography as well, so you won't be surprised to discover that she has had several of her photographs featured in galleries in Cincinnati.

And just when you think her talents know no end, you'll be pleased to discover her adorable Etsy shop OED & ME, full of yummy knitted and crocheted items and prints of a variety of her photographs. Check out her shop here.

Thanks for posting with us Amanda!

Hi! I’m Amanda and I’m so excited to be guest posting on LTC! I’ve been following these ladies since the beginning and have been inspired by their crafting ability and creativity. I was honored that Erin asked me to share with you today.

For this baby-related post, Erin asked me to pass along my go-to take-to-a-new-mom meal. For a long time, I struggled trying to find something that I was confident tasted good and was easy to transport. Once I found this soup, I knew it was a winner. It’s easy, economical, and makes a ton, so there’s enough to share and you don’t have to cook again to feed your own family. Oh, and it’s yummy as well!

Spicy Chicken Soup

(Don't be intimidated by the "spicy" part of the title. You can make it as spicy -- or not -- as you like.)

Ingredients, part 1

2 quarts water

4 boneless, skinless chicken breasts

½ teaspoon salt

1 teaspoon ground black pepper

1 teaspoon garlic powder

2 tablespoons dried parsley

1 tablespoon onion powder

5 cubes chicken bouillon

In a large stockpot, bring all ingredients to a boil over medium heat. Reduce the heat and simmer for an hour. Remove chicken. Reserve broth. Shred chicken. (After this step, you can refrigerate the soup and the shredded chicken until you’re ready to assemble the rest of the soup.)

Now that you have made your own chicken broth (that always makes me feel like an accomplished cook. And it’s done without having to handle a chicken carcass, which, in my opinion, is an added bonus), the rest of the soup is really just a matter of a little chopping and a can opener.

Ingredients, part 2

3 tablespoons olive oil

1 onion, chopped

3 cloves garlic, chopped

1 (16 oz) jar chunky salsa (pick mild, medium, or hot depending on how spicy you want the final product to be)

3 (14.5 oz) cans petite diced tomatoes, undrained

1 (10.75 oz) can condensed tomato soup

2 (16 oz) cans chili beans, undrained (again, choose the spice level based on how hot you want your soup to be)

3 tablespoons chili powder

In that same large stockpot, heat the oil over medium heat. Cook the onion and garlic until they are slightly browned. Add the salsa, tomatoes, tomato soup, chili beans, chili powder, shredded chicken, and 5-6 cups of the broth. Simmer for 30 minutes (though it’s fine left on the stove longer.)

Pack up some soup, take along a container of sour cream, some shredded cheese, a bag of tortilla chips, maybe some sliced green onions, and you’ve got a great meal the family can eat that night or save for a while. Sometimes, if I know there are kids that won’t eat soup (though both of my kids will eat this one), I toss in a few tortillas too, and the family has the makings of quesadillas for the kids.

Sometimes I make corn muffins, usually I'll send along some sort of dessert, and I feel like I’ve provided a good and non-fussy meal for a family with a new addition! (Erin, if I lived anywhere near you, I’d bring you a batch!) Enjoy!

You can find more things that I love, including my two boys, at my family blog, oed. I also have a daily photo blog called photoedaily and an Etsy shop, oed&me. Come check them out!

Citrus Inspired Water

Ahh..the sweet sound of..gulp!

This oh so easy Citrus Inspired Water Recipe is a fun way to spice up your water intake. Especially, for those of us who have a hard time getting in those eight glasses everyday. Lately, I haven't had any trouble considering the temps have been in the 90's! Yikes!

All you need is a nice glass pitcher (to keep things cold ) some sliced fruits and some mint sprigs (mine were free! Thanks neighbor!)

Next dump all ingredients in the pitcher and stir with spoon...chill in the refrigerator for a bit. Serve and voila! Refreshing I must say. The smells of all the fruits together is so nice and the mint is just the touch it needs.

If you stopped by last week you saw my Summertime Topiary using the drink umbrellas which I incorporated into my water drink this time as well! The Citrus Inspired Water is so colorful and fun I think it adds a nice touch to any table.

Thanks for stopping by. I'd love to know if you change up the recipe and find any other fun fruits that make a great combo!

Happy Friday!

Easy as pie...Strawberry Pie that is!

It doesn't take much for me to get a craving for summer fruits. All I have to do is walk through the produce section at my local grocers and I can barely contain myself! One craving that hit me pretty quickly last week was one for Strawberry Pie. There are so many ways to make this particular pie, but the one I use it so easy it will have you enjoying your pie in 5 quick minutes!

Ingredients you'll need:
2 cartons of fresh, gorgeous strawberries
1 ready to eat graham cracker pie crust
1 package of strawberry glaze
sugar

What to do:
-Cut your strawberries to your liking. I prefer to slice mine thin, but it makes the pie a little runnier. Thicker slicing allows the pie to keep it shape better when cut into.
-Mix your strawberries with a teaspoon of sugar, mashing into the strawberries as you go to create a slight glaze.
-Begin adding your store bought strawberry glaze a tablespoon as a time, until your reach desired thickness.
-Spread your strawberry glaze mixture into your graham cracker pie crust.
-Chill in fridge.
-ENJOY! Add your favorite toppings or ice cream, or simply eat alone.
It is the sweetest summer time treat. Quick, easy and Refreshing!!
What summer time recipes do you enjoy??

Happy Thursday!
