Silhouette Project - Boy Shorts

I receieved some white flocked heat transfer material from Silhouette and I knew just what I was going to do with it!  

The little man had some sweatpants that were (finally) getting too short.  It didn't seem right to just put them away when he goes through play clothes like crazy.

So I cut them off using a current pair of shorts as a guide for the length.

Next I followed the instructions on the box.  Super easy to do and so fun!

I found the designs I wanted on the Silhouette Studio which in this case were simply a letter T and a number 3.  I sent them through the machine to be cut and then removed the material off the plastic sheet that I did not want to appear on the shorts.

I put it in place, laid a pillowcase on top, and ironed it down.

I then removed the plastic sheet to reveal my flocked number and letter.

Now we had new play shorts with a fun and meaningful letter & number on them.  They came out perfectly and I was so excited.

My son was pretty happy about it too even if they were more like capri pants than shorts!  Oh, well.  Poor little guy will grow someday!  : )

I can't wait to use the rest of the heat transfer material!  So fun and perfect to add that extra special touch.

Doormat Wall Art

I made these awesome wall hangings last year and they are one of the few decorations in my house that I have never gotten sick of or moved around. I saw the idea in Lowes Creative Solutions and obsessed over it until I could make them for myself. I shared them on my family blog at the time, but I've received so many compliments on them recently that I thought I'd share them here as well.

I started off with a few pieces of poplar board, 1 inch x 12 inches x 6 feet. I had them sawed in half, which left me with two 3 feet x 12 inch boards.

I sanded and stained the boards a dark walnut color,

lined the edges with painters tape, and covered the boards with this doormat that I picked up from Lowes. There were some places on the doormat where there was a little extra rubber attached to the design, so I cut this off first with an exact o knife so that the lines would all be crisp and clean.

I then spray painted 4 light coats of Valspar's Ivory through the doormat - 2 straight down on the mat and 2 from different angles to try to fill in all of the gaps.

I allowed the paint to dry for about 30 minutes after the last coat,

and when I pulled the mat off I literally squealed with delight.

I sealed the wood with a spray polyurethane and hung those babies up as fast as I could.

I used heavy duty sawtooth hangers on the back of the boards, and hung them on wall anchors spaced about 13 inches apart.

The wood shows through beautifully and the design looks so elegant on the wall. The only real problem is that I wanted to put them in every single room of the house-the neutral wood and ivory go with absolutely everything! It took a lot of deliberation before they finally landed in the living room, but I was glad to finally have something to fill the space above the TV, and luckily my mom was willing to hold to hold them up against different walls while I debated.

Quick and Easy Hair Ribbons!

I have spent a lot of time out at the store looking for the 'perfect' hair ribbon or bow for my daughter. Sometimes, they just don't exist. I guess it just took me a little bit longer than the rest of the blogging world to discover I could make my own in just a few quick seconds. And with my large ribbon stash, I can quickly match just about any outfit in the closet in 5 minutes or less, (or right on the way out of the door!!)

First, just cut 8 strips of ribbon, about 1 1/2 inches long.

Fold them in half and secure with a dot of hot glue to create a loop.

Begin securing them together in a circular, 'flower,' shape using hot glue.

Cover your overlapping ribbons with a button, just to hide the seams and add a little pop of color.

To turn your ribbon flower into a hair barrette, just add an alligator clip to the back with hot glue, I use a ribbon to cover the glued side and keep everything nice and clean.

And that's it! (As if you didn't already know it was that easy!)

I think the ice-cream one is just perfect for summer, don't you? My daughter has deemed this one her new favorite, at least for now...

Shut Up And Sew: Art Supply Organizer

This post originally aired on kojo designs blog.  It is a fabulous blog with loads of inspiration.  They hosted a series awhile back called "destash".  I was honored to be a part of it.  Check it out if you have a "stash" that needs some work!

Such a fabulous idea to "destash".  I desperately needed to dive into my abundance of fabric, ribbon, and supplies.  So, here is a small sampling of my stash...

I have a 5 year old little girl.  With my little girl comes an enormous amount of art supplies.  The girl loves to draw, cut, glue, and color anything she can get her hands on.  This means that our kitchen island is constantly covered with an abundance of art supplies.  

My solution: An art organizer that could be hidden from view to fool everyone into thinking our kitchen was clean.  Ha.

So I found a lot of muslin fabric in the stash.  I also found an old pair of pants in the closet that I could put to good use.

I cut the muslin fabric into two large pieces that would fit on our pantry door.  I put the two pieces of fabric right side together and sewed only the bottom and sides together.  I flipped it inside out and had a large muslin rectangle.  I then began preparing the pockets.

I cut out the butt area of the pants as well as the bottom of each pant leg.  I would use the bottom of the pant legs as two pockets for the top of the organizer and the butt of the pants for the large bottom pocket.  I measured how big I wanted each pocket to be and then hemmed the sides and bottom of each one.  

Then I pinned and sewed each pocket into place on my fabric.

 I folded the top of my muslin rectangle over and ironed it down.  Before sewing, I made sure to leave an opening big enough for my dowel rod and ribbon to go through.  I sewed along the bottom edge.

I inserted my dowel rod and some fun ribbon into the opening.

I tied the ribbon in a knot at the top and hung it from a hook inside our pantry door.

I went through my old teacher stash and found these nametag holders.  They were perfect for labeling my art organizer.

I typed up labels for each pocket and then cut them to size and slipped them in the holders.

I clipped a label to each pocket.  I am going to let my little girl write the labels herself when we get a chance.  Great writing practice and she loves being a part of my projects.  Also, who doesn't love a little kid's handwriting?

And there you have it.  Organized art supplies.

 The supplies are within her reach and it makes for easy clean-up because everything has its place.  We can close the pantry door and our art supplies are out of sight.
