Moving on, my current "dining room overhaul" inspired my most recent project, monogramed place settings. Back around mother's day my husband took me to one of those "create your own pottery" places in town, and I made this:
Which made me of course think I needed another set of plates to match. The only problem was, I didn't want to go back to the pottery place and spend $12 a plate to make them. So, instead I spent $5.00 on this set of plates from TJMaxx...
Traced...
Painted (with porcelain marker from local craft store)
Baked (according to paint package directions)
To make this...
It was that simple! And it was so much cheaper than using a paint your own pottery store. It's as easy as picking up a porcelain paint pen at your local craft store! I am intruiged now by all of the things I could do with this idea. Here are some of my favorite ideas for future projects so far...
1)Make for wedding and shower gifts.
2)Monogram bake safe bathroom accessories (soap dish, etc.)
3)Buy cheap dessert plates somewhere and personalize with guests names for dinner parties.
4)Buy pre-glased tiles from hardware store and make a house number plaque.
Hmm, truly the possibilities are endless, and SO much cheaper for all of us on a DIY budget. All together the project cost $9.50 and took about 2 hours prep time, 1 overnight paint drying session, and 25 minutes to bake. Now all YOU have to do is comeback soon to see my dining room before and after. I am in the home stretch, (the fabric for my dining chair redo came in the mail today!)
I'll be linking to these parties this week. Stop by and join me!

Wonderful idea! I can see where this can be a great outlet for numerous projects. Thanks so much for sharing!
ReplyDeletePatrice, I **love** your table. Is this something you purchased or did you make it? This is exactly what I'm looking for on CL and cannot seem to source.
ReplyDeletePatrice, these are so elegant with the chargers underneath. Of course I love the monogram ideas with the multiple fonts. I think this would be great for any occasion! Thanks for sharing.
ReplyDeleteThese are adorable, and that table is incredible!! It looks like you've finally found the perfect spot for your hanging windows, it looks so great! Can't wait to see your chair makeover!
ReplyDeleteLove this project!! I am going to bookmark it as a wedding gift idea!!
ReplyDeletei have NO IDEA you could do that to plates!
ReplyDeleteI think that would make a really cute plate wall grouping if you got tired of having them as your place settings :)
ReplyDeleteLOVE that table! love it love it! and your frames look so good in your dining room and i also love your chandy! the plates are a fabulous idea!
ReplyDeleteLove this idea! How do you know if you can put your plates in the oven or not?
ReplyDeleteI've been redecorating too. There are just so many styles that I like. ha ha
ReplyDeleteYour plates turned out really well! Back in Jan, I decided to switch to all white dishes and I bought a 65 piece set of white dishes from TJ Maxx. I'm thinking I could experiment on a few of the 10 dessert plates that came with it.
I never knew there was a pen out there like that. I can see another visit to the craft store coming very soon!! I wish I was "in the home stretch" with my redo. Doing my entire downstairs all at one time (am I crazy or what?). Everyone was giving me a hard time because I just redid the family room a couple of years ago... give me a break! I was ready for the redo a year ago!!! LOL Good luck on getting everything completed.
ReplyDeleteLove the plates -- they're beautiful -- but SERIOUSLY, that table is what made me gasp. And the hanging windows. I have dining room envy....
ReplyDeleteWould love to know where you got or how you made that table. LOVE it!
ReplyDeletegreat idea! Thanks for sharing!!
ReplyDeleteummm, yes please!! I love this idea!!! simple, wonderful, simply wonderful ;)
ReplyDeleteIs the porcelain and ceramic pen the same? I tried this last year with "porcelaine" brand, which are about $8 a pen and they went dry very quickly. Are yours different? Thank you
ReplyDeleteYou did a great job! I need one of those pens.
ReplyDeleteThis is adorable! What a great idea! I would never think of doing this myself!

Thanks for the tip! I never heard of porcelain markers. I have painted with glass paint, but the markers sound a lot easier.
ReplyDeleteoh. I love this.
ReplyDeleteIt's so refreshing to see a project like this that can be done without the use of a cricut! Love this idea, will definitely be taking it on, thanks for sharing.

ReplyDeletewww.remodelaholic.com"to the party!
I love this! I remember always wishing to do this when I was little. I would take old plates and paint them with my nail polish...disclaimer: I was 8! And no, I didnt eat off them! ;)
ReplyDeleteI love these and would really enjoy doing some of my own... Did you actually eat off of those plates after using the marker on them? I've read you don't after using enamel paint on dishes.. would this be the same??
ReplyDeleteCute and neat and such a great idea for gifts! One question - are the plates till safe to eat on?
ReplyDeleteFor those asking, there is mixed review about the product being food safe. The company itself claims it is food safe, and I know it is dishwasher safe. In the end, you have to make the decision that is best for you! Sorry if that is vague!
ReplyDeleteI l.o.v.e this so much, I'm gonna put it to work for myself!!
ReplyDeleteI am writing a post about some dishes I am making and wanted to let you know I am linking this back to you!! Thanks so much for the GREAT idea and tutorial.
Like one of the other commenters I tried this with the Porcelain brand and it tried out WAY fast! I couldn't believe it. What brand did you use? It's such a cute idea, I'd love to be able to use this and hope that I can find something that works.
ReplyDeleteOh my gosh! I just found this blog...just a few minutes ago, and I don't think I could love it any more than I do!! :) nice job!!!
ReplyDeleteLove this and can't wait to try it. What exactly are you using to transfer the stencil to the plate? I am new to this and I just can't figure out that part! A supplies list would be nice if anyone has an idea!
ReplyDeleteCan it be removed? I'd like to make something similar, and them remove it and redo it again. For instance, make a Christmas image and later take it off and make something for my children party...
ReplyDeleteAWESOME PROJECT! Many Thanks :)
ReplyDeleteThanks so much for this WONDERFUL project! It's all over pinterest now!! Whohoooo! I LOVE it--thanks again for sharing!
ReplyDeleteJust found this on Pinterest and had to try it. I did one already with a stencil using a different brand pen than you (the one that dries too quickly, egh). I traced the letter onto paper, used an exacto knife to cut it out, and taped the stencil to the plate, but I still didn't get perfect edges. I ended up using a mechanical pencil with the lead retracted to cut in on the edges. I'd so much rather do this freehand. Maybe it's the pen. But how on earth did you trace the letter onto the plate? Thanks!
ReplyDeleteI was wondering the same thing as Cristina. How did you trace? also about the table...I also wanted to know about your table. I think I have an idea how you did it just looking at it, but if you have pointers it would be fantastic to hear them :)
ReplyDeleteI found this on Pinterest and LOVE the idea. Do you know if it can be done on colored plates as well? I don't know of the enamel on the plate already would conflict with the porcelain marker. And you have to make sure the plates are "oven safe" right? I love this idea, thanks for sharing!
ReplyDeleteLove the idea! When you say trace, I don't quite understand. How do I get it on the plate?
ReplyDeleteYes, love the idea!! What is the best way to trace it on to the plate?
ReplyDeleteI found this on pinterest and love this idea. I am going to give a try. LOVE your blog and am now following you. When you have a chance check me out at Quest for Delish.
ReplyDeleteAwesome--thanks for sharing! I am kind of a novice though. How do you trace the letters from the paper onto the plates?
ReplyDeleteoh, this is such a great idea! I've seen one of the pens like this in one of the local stores here. This can really be a great personalized gift :)
ReplyDeleteSpanish Pinay
Love the idea! How have they held up?
ReplyDeleteThese are awesome!!! They turned out so nice.
ReplyDeleteLove the idea but instead of porcelain pens would sharpies work??
ReplyDeleteGreat idea!!! How did you trace the letters on to the plate?? I would love to do this with my kids!!
ReplyDeleteLove these i just made mine.. Was just curious on what kind of paint you used?
ReplyDeleteLove them!! One question though - does the paint have to be food safe?? Is it ok to actually eat off them?
ReplyDeleteHello! This is a wonderful tutorial! Thanks for posting.
ReplyDeleteCould you tell us the name of the Porcelain Pen you used? Also, are your plates now dishwasher safe?
Thanks! Have a great week.
Hi,
ReplyDeleteI just found this awesome project you did. May I ask how you got the "b" from the stencil onto the plate? Did you use carbon paper or something? Thx! Dee
