Whimsy Feathered Topiaries

I am going to be honest, when I started this project my husband was laughing at me. My grand idea for a feathered topiary quickly started to look more that a really bad toupee. However, after some trouble shooting and a little trim, I ended with a product I could live with. And honestly, I quite like them now! What do you think? Here is what I did. First, I took a large white styro-foam ball and began hot gluing feathers on it. I continued gluing (in no particular pattern,) until I covered the entire ball. Then, I stuck a wooden skewer in the bottom. After the first look, I was certain that I needed some hairy management. So, I trimmed the feathers down for a few minutes, and ended with this:Much better, right?
Next, I painted the dowel rod red, and 'planted' it in some holly from my bushes outside in a festive jar.
Thinking it still needed a little something more, I added a few crystals to the white feathers to catch the light.I think the finished topiary is very whimsical. They might still be a little hairy, but I am loving it. Sure, I didn't expect the feather to be quite so 'fluffy,' but what can you do? They are perfect for my funky Christmas decorations anyway!I'll be linking to these parties this week.
Happy Thursday!

This reminds me of the Dr. Seuss book The Lorax. I love it :)

These look just like the trucular trees in Dr. Seuss (If they were pink) or maybe Horton hears a Who. They are totally whimsical and fun! Love that!

Please stop by and link this post up to Theme Party Thursday. It's perfect for our holiday theme.
