Paper and Letters Christmas Garland

 Every year, until now, I have been swooned by all things 'cutesy' Christmas. I wanted ribbons and bows and polka dots oh my! I had glitter and feathers and monograms galore. This year, however, I was completely caught off guard by my desire to go a more rustic, natural and home-made with my Christmas decor. I found these awesome little boxes at Hobby Lobby and it really got my little vision running!

I've been on maternity leave with my little guy and wanted to get the Christmas decorating done before I return to work next week. As we were putting up our tree Monday night I realized if I wanted to cut back on the cutesy I couldn't use half of my decorations from past years. This meant our tree was looking a little sparse. So, I decided to take matters into my own hands and use some spare materials we had to make a few strands of garland, and I loved the way they turned out!
 The first one I made was a strand of stars cut from old dictionary pages. I didn't use a template, but just free handed 3 different sizes of stars. I stacked them all up in varying order, and poked a hole right through the center of all 50 or so stars at one time with a large sewing needle. I used basic white thread on the needle to string them all together. I love the look!! It's so homemade and just perfect for our not so perfect house right now!
The second garland was made from chipboard letters and twine.
I ended up using smaller chipboard letters per hubby's request, which was a good call! I simply hot-glued the letters to the twine in no particular order. I left the letters unfinished to add to the natural (and simple) look. It took less than 20 minutes to make and put up on the tree.
In the end these garlands were incredibly simple and quick to make, and they ended up being exactly what my tree needed. All it took to spruce up the tree was a little cheap thinking outside of the box! What Christmas crafts can you make for free from your craft closet this year? It's certainly not too early to start getting creative this holiday season!
 Merry Wednesday!

Mini Pillow Ornaments

I am calling my newest project "Mini Pillow Ornaments" simply because they remind me of little pillows.  If you have been following LTC for awhile, you know I often mix my love of pillows with my love of iron-on transfer paper.  The evidence can be found HERE.

I used my Silhouette machine for this project but for those of you who don't own a Silhouette machine, you have options!  You can purchase regular iron-on transfer paper at stores like Wal-Mart or Target.

I found the images I wanted to use in my Silhouette Studio.  I used Silhouette heat transfer in dark pink and teal.  After the cutting was complete, I cut around them and then peeled away the extra paper leaving only my cute images intact.

I ironed them onto squares/rectangles of muslin material.  This is my go-to fabric as it is neutral, soft, and a bit textured.  I also cut a second piece of muslin for the backing of each ornament.

I cut out each image leaving an extra 1/2 inch all the way around.  Then with right sides facing each other, I put a string or ribbon of choice in a loop in between the two pieces of fabric upside down.

Next up was the pinning.

I left an opening at the bottom for stuffing purposes.

Pinking shears are so much fun, aren't they?

And of course, cutting corners is a must.

Then the little babies got all stuffed up.

And the bottom opening was stitched by hand.

I only got four done so far but now I can't wait to make more.  I am so excited about these little ornaments!  They will show up in my babies' stockings this year for Christmas.

Beware family and close friends, you will most likely be receiving one of these for Christmas!

Wouldn't they be so cute as a package topper?

I also can't get my mind off of how cute a tree would be covered in "Mini Pillow Ornaments"!

Oh, the possibilities...

Whew...I better get busy.

Happy Tuesday!

Photography Tips: For you Auto-Users

I was so glad that so many of you entered last week to win a copy of Say No to Auto!

(If you didn't win it, you might just want to head on over and purchase a copy. It is really great information and a very affordable little guide!)

01 copyXblog

Now, for those of you who are still using the Auto setting exclusively, let me just say that I understand. Learning to shoot in Manual is not easy. It's not hard either, but it does require a bit of reading, a bit of experimenting, and quite a bit of practicing. But you can do it!!

In the meantime, how about some baby steps away from Auto? You can definitely do that!

Now, in my humble opinion, Auto mode on your camera is a bit like all-purpose cleaner. Have you ever found an all purpose cleaner that actually does a superior job at cleaning everything? I haven't. I think that all-purpse cleaners, in their attempt to include everything, end up not being very good at anything.

The Auto mode on your camera is a bit like this. It seems like the "all purpse" setting. But what do your photos look like if you're trying to take portraits on Auto? Yuck. Children running? Bleh. Landscapes? Meh. None of it is that great. Poor Auto, it doesn't seem very all-purpose to me.

Now this is not entirely Auto's fault.

If you are in your backyard taking a picture of a beautiful autumn tree, your settings would be much different than if you were taking a close up photo of your child's face sitting in front of that same tree. Your settings would be equally different if your child was running around after the soccer ball than if they were sitting on a blanket reading.

The Auto setting doesn't know what you're trying to get a picture of, so it just gives it's best guess. You need to give your camera some help to get the picture that you want.

If you aren't ready to make the big jump from Auto to Manual this second, that's okay. How about baby steps? Let's take a step away from Auto, and start using the other settings, the ones that actually tell your camera what type of picture you are trying to get.

Now, if you're at your kid's soccer game and trying to get some great pictures of the action, don't use Auto, use Sports Mode.

This uses a fast shutter speed, continuous shooting (where you hold down the button and your camera will just keep taking shot after shot), and it will continually adjust the focus to follow the moving subject.

If you're trying to get a picture of your backyard in all of it's beautiful autumn glory, don't use Auto, use Landscape Mode.

This uses a small aperture to make sure the details of your picture are in focus, and a slower shutter speed to ensure that there is still enough light for your shot to be properly exposed.

Picnik collagelandscape

If you're taking a picture of your sweet baby playing on a blanket in the backyard, don't use Auto, use Portrait Mode.

This uses a wide Aperture so that your baby's sweet face will be crisp and clear, but the background behind him will be softly blurred.

Picnik collageperson

If you're taking a picture of the petals of a flower, don't use Auto, use Macro Mode.

This switches your camera into a special close focus mode and will use a wider aperture to keep the front petal clear while blurring out the back petals.

Picnik collageflower

If you aren't entirely sure which setting to use, unless your subject is running, try the No Flash Mode.

This uses a wide aperture and a higher ISO setting to give you the best lighting possible without the use of your flash, which is what you want in most circumstances.

Picnik collagenoflash

Now, these are not all of the settings on your camera, some cameras will have more and some will have less, but these are the most often used settings.

This moral of the story is, it's okay if you don't want to shoot on Manual right now, but in the very least, STOP USING YOUR AUTO SETTING!

I'm so excited to talk through some different photography things with you in the next few weeks! We'll be going over camera equipment, natural lighting, flash photography, bouncing your flash, composition ideas and lots more! I can't wait!

As always, happy Monday!

Friday Finds {Pinterest-My Style}

Fall-tography {Pinterest Inspired}

Photography has always been a number one priority in my families life. My fiance works as a photographer and gives such fabulous inspiration on a daily basis. I on the other hand am simply amateur, but REALLY enjoy being behind {and in front} of the camera.

The fabulous change in the weather makes for the perfect combo of cloudy and colorful days to capture just the right shots.

I found a couple of shots I wanted to share via Pinterest and couple from Tim and I that I had pinned to my {ispy with my lil camera board}! Enjoy!

{source}

I fell in love with this shot. We were engaged last October and I hope to have a fall wedding as well.. keeping this photo inspiration on the back burner just in case!

{source}

I love this photo of Tim and I. This was my regular turning the camera around and hoping for the best! PS! Gotta love Instagram! {follow me @ j_johnson}

{source}

Wow! This always impresses me; I enjoy my friends and admire their hobbies {especially when I receive jars of honey at my door}. What a great time of year to capture the daily lives of the ever so, hard-working bee.

I would love to see what inspires you to snap a shot. Leave me a comment or let me know your Instagram user name! I'd love to follow you!

Happy Friday LTC!
