Stencil Project Favorites!

One of the first things I started to admire in peoples homes when I started blogging and reading other creative blogs were stencils. It's amazing how stenciling an entire wall or a home accent can immediately change and personalize a space. The first stencil I ever attempted to use in my home got me hooked...

{Hourglass Stencil form Cutting Edge Stencils}

But I think my all-time favorite so far is still the one I have proudly hanging on my dining room wall, The Bon Appetit Stencil!
I love the idea that you can put a stencil on anything and it not be stationary. It's amazing how it can transform a cheap piece of wood, and can be versatile enough to move around. We've had this stencil in two different rooms in the house and in 5 different locations all together. I love it! Now it's hanging sideways on the dining room wall. The options are unlimited!!

Polka-dot Laundry Room Update and a Stencil Giveaway!

Over a year ago we set to work organizing our laundry room to create a more inviting and productive space to get things done. If you've been following from the beginning you might remember the Sock Exchange and Laundry Room post found here?

Well, with a baby on the way, our laundry room is now doing double duty. We needed the old craftroom/ office for a nursery and there was simply no other room in our tiny house for my stuff to go! I decided quickly that if I was going to be spending even more time in this little nook of the house each day, I needed to jazz up the space a little bit.

It's no secret that we love Cutting Edge Stencils around here, so I decided to turn to them for help. I ordered the large polka-dot all over stencil, and it was just what I was looking for.

With this stencil I also got CES Clip-on Stencil Level, and it made getting the first stencil position perfect.
It was a simple change, but it livened the space up just enough to make it fun.
Now, ready for a chance to win your very own Cutting Edge Stencil??

Polka Dot Makeover and Cutting Edge Stencil Giveaway!

Hey everyone!

Hope you've been enjoying the guest posts that I've had lined up for you these last several weeks. Pretty great stuff, right?

Well I just wanted to drop in and show off a small project that I was working on last week. Want a sneak peek?

More polka dots!!

You may remember Tiffany's adorable Polka-Dot Closet makeover from last month, and next month you'll see Patrice's take on this adorable trend as well. Fun, right? Here are the details from my project.

I am in the process of transitioning my son's room into a big boy room. We have the new bed and cool big boy sheets, but I'm trying to do little things here and there to update it. (I am still finishing a few nursery projects that were put on hold while I was on bed rest, so we'll get there!)

I had made him this memo board last year with a frame and an old window valance that matched his crib skirt, so that needed to be updated now that the cribs skirt (and crib) are gone. Also, now that he is bringing pictures home from Sunday School and will be starting Pre-School this fall, he needs something that will accommodate more than just 4x6 snapshots.

LTC 8

I found this large bulletin board from Walmart for about $8. The walnut color trim matches the trim in his room, so I decided to leave that alone.

LTC 9

I taped off the edges and lightly coated the cork board with white spray paint. I sprayed horizontally, vertically, and then diagonally for good coverage.

LTC 10

I ended up using a half a can to paint the whole thing, but I imagine you would use less if you weren't trying to lighten a darker color.

2010 04 30 9122

Since the feature wall of the room is striped, I wanted to cover the cork with some sort of geometric print. I wanted polka dots, but as a perfectionist I was worried that if I did the dots by hand, I would be stressed if they weren't equally spaced or sized. Luckily Cutting Edge Stencils had exactly what I needed.

LTC 3

This small polka dot stencil from Cutting Edge Stencils was perfect for the task and the stencil filled out the space perfectly.

LTC 4

I found a royal blue craft paint that matches some of the accents of the room, loaded my paint roller with paint, rolled off the excess, and started painting.

LTC 5

I rolled over one dot and a time instead of covering the whole stencil with paint, and was finished very quickly.

LTC 6

It was the perfect bulletin board makeover! The polka dots are just what I needed to spruce up this board, and the space in his room.

LTC 7

This bulletin board makes quite an impact! I can't wait to fill it with my son's goodies.

I'm excited that this board will look great with or without art work and photos. So in the periods where there are fewer pictures on the board, it still looks kind of like a big piece of graphic art. Much much better than a large brown cork board, am I right?

Polka-Dot Closet

I shared my son's stenciled closet with you a few weeks ago.  I was so excited to find that it made the Top 10 on The CSI Project.  It was among some absolutely amazing painted walls and I couldn't believe it.

When I discovered that Cutting Edge Stencils had a new polka-dot stencil, I knew that would be my next choice.  I love polka-dots.  Really though, who doesn't?

Last summer, I made over the girls room to accomodate both new baby and big girl which I shared here, it instantly became my favorite room in the house.  It filled up quick with all their "stuff" and when we had to make room for a dollhouse, it only made sense to take the closet doors off.  It makes the room appear larger and it is pretty fun to look at all the sweet dresses hanging there in the closet.  And after seeing the finished product in my son's room, I am now a huge fan of stenciled closets.  It was the girls turn now and their closet needed some polka-dots, of course.

So I got my husband to help me this time because it was a bigger closet and there was more shelving to mess with.  I convinced him it would be a great way to spend our Saturday!  : )

So I cleaned out all the "stuff" and had a blank white wall to work with.

My husband so kindly took down all the shelves for me.

Now it was time for the fun to begin.  I purchased 2 half pint Valspar samples.  I wanted a light and subtle pink.  My big girl and I chose the color Utterly Pink and it was just right for this project.  And at $3 a pop, this was the perfect amount of paint at the perfect price.

I poured it into my paint tray and applied it to my mini roller provided by Cutting Edge.

And this time I used spray adhesive to apply my stencil and the clip on stencil level from Cutting Edge to get my polka-dots straight.

This project did take me awhile but when it was complete, I quickly realized it was well worth it.

I was kind of wishing I didn't have to put anything back in the closet because the polka-dots were so fun and pretty to look at.  But in the spirit of functionality and organization, everything had to be put back in its place.

The polka-dots were subtle just like I wanted.

They make the perfect backdrop for cute little dresses and fun girly things that fill up their closet.

The polka-dots even make not-so-pretty things like humidifiers look cute and fun!  : )

My big girl was thrilled with the polka-dots!

Also, I have fun news for YOU...tomorrow will be another chance to win a Cutting Edge Stencil of your choice!

Happy Tuesday!

I'll be participating in these link parties this week!
