State Love...{A Silhouette Project}

 I am sure you have seen some great 'state love' all over the blog world. I particularly remember a site I saw one time with a fabulous graphic/ geometric state cut out with a simple heart placed over the city in which you live. Well, as soon as I got my Silhouette SD several months back, I couldn't wait to make my own rendition.

 

Using the Silhouette Software, it was very easy to create. All I had to do was locate a clear state outline. I took mine from some free clip-art using google images. Using the software, you can select an area and have the computer trace an outline for us. It was so easy to do!

 

Next, all I had to do was select some great scrapbook paper to cut my design out on and send it to my Silhouette machine. 

 

I decided to frame my project using an old cast off. 

I took the picture and backing out of the frame, and glued the state with its little heart directly to the glass. I love the way it looks like it is floating in the frame.

 

Simple state love, my favorite! Can you think of something that would look great floating on a bookshelf near you?

The Pinwheel Bib

I had the opportunity to guest post on Infarrantly Creative last week!  I was honored and had fun visiting another blog for a day!  Thanks again, Beckie.  

I wanted to share this project with you all today because my baby is actually 1 year old today!  Unbelievable.  I am totally in denial.  She is my last baby so I am not taking it well.  Instead of focusing on this unavoidable fact of life, I keep myself busy with party preparations and we are all happy!  

The bib is a big deal for that first birthday.  It had to be special and handmade by Momma.  With pinwheels as the chosen theme, I created the pinwheel bib...

I began by using a store-bought bib to make a cardstock pattern.  I simply traced the bib onto cardstock and then cut it out.

I chose yellow and white seersucker as the fabric for the main part of the bib.  I pinned my paper pattern to the fabric and cut it out.

I had a barely used hand towel at the bottom of our linen closet that could be used for the backing.  It was freshly washed and just waiting to be made into a bib.

I pinned my paper pattern onto the towel and cut out another bib shape for the back.

Next, I made a square pattern out of paper about 3 1/4 x 3 1/4 size.  I chose two other fabrics in party colors and cut out the squares.

I then laid the squares with wrong sides together.  I made cuts about 2/3 of the way down diagonally at each corner.

The next step was to sew around all the edges in my square including the cut ones to hold the fabric pieces together.

Now it was time to sew the square onto the front bib fabric.  I pinned it into place first.

I then sewed an X in the middle of the pinwheel to keep it securely on the bib.

My next step was to fold every other triangle down to the center.  I pinned them in place one at a time sewing around the part of the triangle that was left lying on the bib.  

When the triangles were unpinned, they remained loose and open.  I then pinned them all into place and sewed a circle around the middle. 

I sewed a button in the center to complete the pinwheel top.

I used a thin piece of ribbon to make the stick and sewed right down the middle of it.

I chose a coordinating ribbon to use as my closure for the bib.  I pinned it into place before I began sewing the bib pieces together.

I kept the bib right side out and sewed around the edges.  Raw edges were the look I was going for and especially since this is a one-time use special occasion kind of bib.  

After the bib was all put together, I sewed a coordinating button on one end.

Now the bib could close and stay put on our birthday girl.

The completed bib just made me smile.

Now that my project is complete, I am lovin' the bib but still hatin' the fact that my baby is turning one.

Polka Dot Makeover and Cutting Edge Stencil Giveaway!

Hope you've been enjoying the guest posts that I've had lined up for you these last several weeks. Pretty great stuff, right?

Well I just wanted to drop in and show off a small project that I was working on last week. Want a sneak peek?

You may remember Tiffany's adorable Polka-Dot Closet makeover from last month, and next month you'll see Patrice's take on this adorable trend as well. Fun, right? Here are the details from my project.

I am in the process of transitioning my son's room into a big boy room. We have the new bed and cool big boy sheets, but I'm trying to do little things here and there to update it. (I am still finishing a few nursery projects that were put on hold while I was on bed rest, so we'll get there!)

I had made him this memo board last year with a frame and an old window valance that matched his crib skirt, so that needed to be updated now that the cribs skirt (and crib) are gone. Also, now that he is bringing pictures home from Sunday School and will be starting Pre-School this fall, he needs something that will accommodate more than just 4x6 snapshots.

I found this large bulletin board from Walmart for about $8. The walnut color trim matches the trim in his room, so I decided to leave that alone.

I taped off the edges and lightly coated the cork board with white spray paint. I sprayed horizontally, vertically, and then diagonally for good coverage.

I ended up using a half a can to paint the whole thing, but I imagine you would use less if you weren't trying to lighten a darker color.

Since the feature wall of the room is striped, I wanted to cover the cork with some sort of geometric print. I wanted polka dots, but as a perfectionist I was worried that if I did the dots by hand, I would be stressed if they weren't equally spaced or sized. Luckily Cutting Edge Stencils had exactly what I needed.

This small polka dot stencil from Cutting Edge Stencils was perfect for the task and the stencil filled out the space perfectly.

I found a royal blue craft paint that matches some of the accents of the room, loaded my paint roller with paint, rolled off the excess, and started painting.

I rolled over one dot and a time instead of covering the whole stencil with paint, and was finished very quickly.

It was the perfect bulletin board makeover! The polka dots are just what I needed to spruce up this board, and the space in his room.

This bulletin board makes quite an impact! I can't wait to fill it with my son's goodies.

I'm excited that this board will look great with or without art work and photos. So in the periods where there are fewer pictures on the board, it still looks kind of like a big piece of graphic art. Much much better than a large brown cork board, am I right?
